About

A unique approach to psychiatric services for Farmington, CT and the surrounding areas

While medication frequently plays a role in addressing biological issues, individual psychotherapy is also extremely important in understanding one’s behavioral patterns – where they come from, and how to modify them if necessary to avoid repeating problematic cycles.
While these two interventions are hopefully addressed in a typical practice, we go beyond these, by exploring issues in the family and work environments of the patient. To this end, occasional family therapy sessions and work stress and career counseling can be incorporated into the treatment plan. These can all be performed here, or closely coordinated with other individual or family therapists, if you are already in treatment.

Multiple strategies for addressing stress

Tertiary prevention may be illustrated by giving medication to someone suffering an illness after drinking contaminated water. It involves treatment of an already existing situation (in the workplace, the individual suffering from job stress) to prevent any further worsening of the condition and to promote return to health. Thus, this category includes the traditional individual treatment model. The CWSR offers an initial Individual Stress Evaluation, after which the physician and client decide upon a course of action, as described in A Unique Approach, above.
Secondary prevention is illustrated by giving someone a vaccine to prevent potential illness from future exposure to contaminated water. It involves treatment to help a relatively healthy individual to stay healthy, regardless of the environment. At the Center for Work Stress Reduction, we offer stress management courses of varying length, which may be taught at our office, or on-site at the workplace.
Primary prevention in our analogy would entail cleaning the water system itself to create a healthier environment, thus reducing our reliance on medication and vaccines. It attempts to address the problem at its cause, rather than treating its symptoms. Primary stress prevention at the CWSR involves organizational consultation, which may include anything from conflict management within a small work team, to an entire organizational analysis to identify and address areas that may be causing stress and morale problems.
Each approach ultimately has the same goal: to help individuals and organizations realign the way in which they think and respond to better navigate the changing work environment.
